Could a theme park based on the hit movie “The Hunger Games” be in the works?
Speculation has been rife this week about which park might feature an attraction after Lionsgate, the studio behind the “Hunger Games” movies, announced in a conference call that the company had been approached about theme parks in two territories, and was considering the possibility.
No further details were given at the time. Now the Orlando Sentinal says isn’t going to be at Busch Garden, SeaWorld or Sesame Street, which are owned by the Orlando-based SeaWorld Entertainment Inc.
“Whoever is interested in a theme-park license for that, it isn’t us,” SeaWorld spokesman Fred Jacobs the paper quoted Thursday.
A spokeswoman for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts declined to comment about the move, but many speculate that the movie, with its dark and violent themes, aren’t a fit for its family-friendly parks.
Universal Parks & Resorts, with more adult entertainment features like the Simpsons, King Kong and Terminator Halloween Horror Nights, is a plausible fit for the franchise
A spokesman for Universal would not comment Thursday, said the paper.
The Hunger Games is the first book in the popular, young adult sci-fi trilogy by the author Suzanne Collins. A movie based on the novel was released by Lions Gate last year and grossed nearly $700 million worldwide.
The latest instalment in the film franchise, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” will arrive in theaters on Nov. 21.
As for a theme park, right now it’s only a possibility. Let’s just hope it doesn’t actually feature violent clashes between kids.
