SELMA, Ala. – The daughter of the late Martin Luther King Jr. is in Selma, Alabama for the 50th anniversary of the “Bloody Sunday” civil rights march.
Bernice King says it’s important for her to be at the anniversary commemoration. She says the struggle for civil rights is unending.
Saturday marks the 50th anniversary of the day Alabama state troopers and local police beat marchers trying to walk from Selma to the state Capitol in Montgomery in a demonstration for voting rights.
The violence set the stage for the huge Selma-to-Montgomery march that King’s father led two weeks later.
The march helped build support for passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Bernice King was a toddler at the time.
